Despite responding to EMS calls, the volunteer firefighters were not included in the first round of vaccinations as were EMTs
A fire chief is raising a red flag, saying he was told some of his firefighters would not be receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, even though they respond to EMS calls as first responders.
In the town of Colonie, there are 12 volunteer fire departments.
Chief Jeffrey Kayser says that because some of them did not have a New York State EMS agency code, his firefighters would have to wait to get vaccinated, even though they face the same health hazards as other fire departments and EMS members who have been cleared for the vaccine.
The chief says he took his concerns to state and local lawmakers and to Albany County Executive Dan McCoy.
He tells CBS 6 this was bureaucratic oversight – and that work is underway to get these firefighters vaccinated.
