Three Italian firefighters were killed and three others critically injured in the line of duty early this morning in a building explosion that appears to have been deliberate. The incident happened in the Alexandria area of Piedmont. The Piedmont region boarders France and Switzerland and is along the Alps and this occurred in an agricultural area.
The firefighters were responding to a report of an explosion in an unoccupied farm building when a second, stronger blast occurred upon their arrival.
Three other firefighters were critically injured. Reports are that a timer and a gas canister have been found in the rubble leading to the reports that the explosions were intentional; the timer was remote-controlled. The owner of the farm building, which had been renovated and up for sale for two years, has been questioned.
“Vigili del Fuoco” firefighters Antonino Candido (a new member of the fire department), 32, Matteo Gastaldo, 47, and Marco Triches, 36, lost their lives.
